What questions do you still have?

Although we have studied boolean operators I still don't understand where to use them. WHen doing research the default boolean operator puts in either "and" or "or" and both brings up whatever I am searching. But then we were also told that adding "and not" helps restrict the search from looking for certain words yet not all search engines recognize these boolean operators unless you do an advanced search which I do not really know where to find. Some search engines supposedly allow the plus or minus sign though so I guess if I get more familiar with that then I can restrict and narrow down my results more efficiently.

What did you already know of the material pesented in the lesson?

Since we are still on Boolean logic, everything I learned today was new. The fact that there are default boolean operators was definately new. I did not know that search engines add either "and" or "or" when more then one word is entered into the search box. The fact that most search engines use "and" though makes a lot of sense, when doing research I have realized that the majority of the time the results have both words i entered but in rare cases they do not and I realize that those search engines have "or" as their default boolean operator.

What did you learn? What material was new to you? What were the three most important things you've learned in today's lesson/independent practice?

Today we learned about Boolean operators. These are the words, "and," "or" and "and not" which are used when conducting research to either expand, narrow or restrict the search. The way these words are used is called Boolean logic, as well as Boolean algebra because it is considered a field of mathematics  due to its ability to manipulate large sets of data. Boolean logic is often used by search engines to perform advanced searches which are complex. This ability to connect keywords and phrases allows the search engine to get a better understanding of what exactly you want and can better retrieve the results. I never know about Boolean logic at all and the three words, the three things they can do and the definition of Boolean logics were all new to me.
